Select Committee on Standards and Privileges Fifth Report

Annex v17

Letter to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards from Mr Vyan Gresty

I write to confirm that it is my understanding that MARY MATIN was employed as a nanny/housekeep by Mr Vaz and Ms Maria Fernandes during the period in which my wife worked for Ms Fernandes as a Personal Assistant. I frequently dropped my wife off at the Vaz family home before 9 am. My wife worked in a building in the rear garden of their home in ***, and, because there was no side access to her office, and she did not have a key to the house, Mary would let her in through the front door. On two occasions, Ms Fernandes was also present, and I was invited into the house for coffee, made by Mary.

I have also been present at Ms Fernandes' Byron Road, Harrow office, when Mary has been in the office, carrying out duties. The last occasion was on the day after my wife became ill, and Mary supplied refreshments during my visit.

My wife and I were entertained to dinner at the Restaurant where Mary's husband worked, in High Street, ***, and Mary joined us during the meal, at which we struck up a long conversation with her about their mutual employment with Ms Fernandes.

There is no doubt in my mind that MARY MATIN was employed by Mr Vaz and Ms Fernandes, at least from September 1998 to May 2000.
