Select Committee on Standards and Privileges Fifth Report

Annex vii11

Letter to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards from Mr Arif Husain, General Mediterranean Holding (UK) Ltd

Further to your letter of 30 October 2001, to the best of my recollection, the accounts of General Mediterranean Holding SA went to print some time between Mr Vaz's acceptance and his resignation.

It is clear that there is confusion at your end about the directors listed in the report of Compagnie Internationale de Participations Bancaires et Financières SA (Cipaf). I am enclosing photocopies of the page that lists the directors of Cipaf for 1998 and 1999. There is no mention of Mr Vaz in either of these two reports.

Furthermore, please note that General Mediterranean Holding SA was established in 1979, Cipaf was established in 1982 and General Mediterranean Holding (UK) Ltd was incorporated in 1991. It is therefore impossible that there would be any mention of the year 1978 in any of the accounts of the three companies. I would suggest, with respect, that you eliminate any reference to Cipaf as not only is it causing confusion, it is incorrect.

Turning to your question about benefits to Mr Vaz, I can only speak for the companies in the General Mediterranean Group and to the best of my knowledge, none of these has provided any financial support or benefit to him.

31 October 2001
