Select Committee on Standards and Privileges Fifth Report

Annex IV13

Letter to Mr Vyan Gresty from the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards

Thank you for your letter of 8 November 2001 and for telephoning me yesterday. I was also grateful to Mrs Gresty for telephoning me last night.

I am most concerned to hear that you feel that Mrs Gresty is being subjected to intimidation and harassment in this way.

I am referring your correspondence to the Chairman of the Standards and Privileges Committee forthwith. Any attempt to interfere in any way with the provision of information to a Parliamentary inquiry would be regarded as contempt of the House.

I appreciate very much Mrs Gresty's willingness to provide information to assist me particularly while she is recovering from a serious illness. I do hope Mrs Gresty will not feel undermined in her very proper efforts to act in the public interest.

I am now in receipt of your second letter of today and I look forward to meeting Mrs Gresty and Miss Eggington on Monday morning 12 November 2001.

Please pass on my good wishes to Mrs Gresty.

9 November 2001
