Annex i11
Letter to the Parliamentary Commissioner
for Standards from Mr David Broad, Hinduja Foundation (UK)
We spoke briefly on 27th March about your letter
of 26th March and you kindly sent me a copy of the Standing Order
of 1998 setting out your own and your Committee's powers.
So far as the Foundation is concerned, the answers
to the points you raise are as follows:
· A thorough review of our files and records
going back to 1991 by those of us involved has revealed only one
payment to Mr Vaz, Miss Maria Fernandes (Mrs Vaz) or to Mapesbury
Communications, namely the one on 6th July 1995 to Mapesbury Communications,
to which you referred.
· This payment for £1,196.10 was for
services the company provided in order that an eminent Indian
divine, Swami Dada J.P. Vaswani, could address an invited audience
in the Palace of Westminster on 8th June 1995, and that a reception
could be held immediately afterwards. The payment was included
on page 9 of the our accounts (copy enclosed) submitted to the
Charity Commission for that year.
· The services provided are listed in the
company's invoice of 4th June 1995 (copy attached).
· I also attach a list of the guests who
accepted the invitation to attend the Lecture/Reception and a
letter from the Chairman of the Trustees of the Foundation thanking
Swami Vaswani for his lecture. I have been unable to unearth any
further papers on the event.
