Select Committee on Standards and Privileges Fifth Report

Annex ii2

Letter to the Clerk of the Committee on Standards and Privileges from Mr Geoffrey Bindman

Thank you for your letter of yesterday setting out the questions which the Committee wishes to have answered. I have sent to the solicitor acting for Mapesbury Communications the questions which you have set out in your letter have asked him to provide the answers to you as a matter of urgency. He is Philip Conway of Davenport Lyons, 1 Old Burlington Street, London W1X 2NL.

You told me on the telephone, if I understood you correctly, that the only other outstanding matter was your request to the Treasurer of the Leicester East Labour Party for particulars of the receipt of £1000 from Mr Attwall in early 1993. I have also written to Councillor Singh Clair endorsing your request on behalf of Mr Vaz.

The matter which I raised with you on the telephone was the complaint which the Commissioner has upheld relating to the fact that Mr Vaz when recommending Mr Zaiwalla for an honour did not disclose a "financial relationship" with him. You said you thought that Mr Vaz had sufficiently dealt with this in his answers to the Committee but he has asked me to summarise the argument against upholding this complaint and I am writing to you separately about this.
