Annex ii4
Letter to the Parliamentary Commissioner
for Standards from Ms Eileen Eggington QPM
I am a former detective chief superintendent and
from November 1996, until my retirement in November 1999, served
as Deputy Head of the Metropolitan Police Special Branch at New
Scotland Yard. I was awarded the Queens Police Medal for Distinguished
Police Service in the 1997 New Years Honours.
During the past six months I have been giving emotional
and practical support to Rita and Vyan Gresty, of * * *. I consider
that both Rita and Vyan have information about Keith and Maria
Vaz which will assist your enquiry.
Rita worked as Personal Assistant/Secretary to Maria
Ferandes, wife of Keith Vaz, in her legal practice, Fernandes
Vaz, from 10.8.98. The business was initially run from an
office in the Vaz family home at * * *, but in August 1999 moved
to Byron Chambers, 29 Byron Road, Harrow, HA1 1JR. On 12.5.00,
Rita went sick with severe anxiety and depression, caused largely
by increasing pressures at work. For the past six months she has
spent much of her time as an in-patient in the Mental Health Unit
at Northwick Park Hospital with 'reactive depression'. On 15.11.00
Maria Fernandes, a sole practitioner dealing with immigration
matters and visa applications, dismissed Rita.
Rita and Vyan have been following the news concerning
Keith and Maria Vaz and they have talked to me about their first
hand knowledge of events which, I believe, touches on your enquiry.
I have set out the information Rita has given on the attached
appendix. I also attach a typed note from Vyan.
They are both willing to speak to you directly, should
you wish to investigate these matters. They are not willing for
their identities to be made public.
I am away on holiday in Greece from 19-25.2.01 and
in Switzerland from 28.2.01-13.3.01. Please let me know if I can
be of any further help before my departure on Monday.
