3,330 (+ 8.9%)
Estimated average number of times a person is
stopped and checked: 3.7
People smugglers stopped and checked (as at
1 July 2002): 132 (equivalent to 2001 over a comparable period),
of 18 different nationalities
Average daily number of people staying in the
Sangatte Centre: 1,332 (peak of 1,768 on 21 January 2002)
On 17 July 2002 1,372 people were staying
in the centre, and 1,310 on 18 July 2002. That day 69 people
arrived at the centre, of whom 40 claimed to have come from Iraq,
13 from Afghanistan and 13 were minors.
