Select Committee on Transport, Local Government and the Regions Minutes of Evidence

Examination of Witnesses (Questions 80-81)

WEDNESDAY 10 JULY 2002

HE M DANIEL BERNARD AND M DENIS DOUTÉ

  80. So do you want to end this business? Would you prefer not to have trains with freight going through the tunnel at all now?
(M Douté) No, of course not. Although this has been extremely difficult and very hard on the morale of the people working there, they are very willing to develop the traffic and we are as much as they are, so we are all working very hard to try to end all this trouble and be back on normal traffic.

  81. So you think there really is a commitment by yourselves and by the French Government to the trans-European rail network?
(M Douté) Indeed. If I was spending as much time on any other traffic I would work at least 150 hours per week.

Chairman: You would probably, M Douté, be a lot richer than you are now. Your Excellency and M Douté, you have been very indulgent and we are very grateful to you both for attending today. Thank you very much indeed.
