Select Committee on Welsh Affairs Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

Memorandum submitted by the Unversity of Wales College of Medicine

Thank you for your letter of 10 June 2002 concerning the draft NHS (Wales) Bill. We are grateful for the opportunity to comment though in the time available I have only been able to consult with the College's Senior Management Team.

The College is aware of the proposals and has been pleased to have been involved in some of the related discussions arranged by the National Assembly for Wales. In general therefore the College welcomes the development of the Community Health Councils in Wales and the establishment of Health Professions Wales, with whom we will have a particularly close relationship.

We also welcome the establishment of the Wales Centre for Health. However, we are concerned that Clause 3 refers to the WCH providing ``training". This implies that training in public health is not currently provided but this College is involved in the provision of such training at a number of different levels. That said the College looks forward to contributing to the work of the Wales Centre for Health in a substantial and sustained way.
