Select Committee on Culture, Media and Sport Written Evidence

APPENDIX 61

Memorandum submitted by Paula O'Shea, Journalism Course Manager, City College, Brighton and Hove

PCC AND TRAINING

Professor Pinker of the Press Complaints Commission has asked me to give first hand testimony to the select committee about the PCC's role in training. I am happy to do so. I hope this email will suffice.

I jointly manage four journalism training courses accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists. Part of the syllabus is to understand the workings of the PCC, and we take this very seriously on our courses. Therefore every year we invite a member of the PCC to Brighton to lecture to the students. And every year they oblige. A senior member of their staff visits the college and answers students' questions on the role of the PCC in preparation for a written feature on ethics. This is a very valuable part of the course, and we are grateful for their willingness to come and explain the code of ethics to the trainees.
