APPENDIX 88
Memorandum submitted by Diane Pring
I am writing this letter to give my thanks to
the Press Complaints Commission for their help that they gave
to me and three other families after a report was printed in the
Welsh Mirror.
On 16 December 2001, four boys died in a tragic
road accident of which my son Leighton was the driver. The inquest
into this accident was held on 17 October 2002. The following
day the Welsh Mirror reported on this inquest giving wrong
facts and information. As you can imagine, the inquest was very
upsetting and to then see the report that was printed was heartbreaking
to myself and the other families.
I wrote to the editor, Piers Morgan, stating
the correct facts but had no reply. After about three weeks I
wrote to the Press Complaints Commission sending a copy of the
letter I had sent to the Mirror and immediately received
a reply, followed by another two letters keeping me informed.
Then on 17 December I received a written apology from Piers Morgan,
editor of the Welsh Mirror, also a letter from Stephen
Abell asking if I would be prepared to accept this apology which
I accepted.
As I stated to the Press Complaints Commission,
I understand reports have to be printed, but for people that did
not know all the facts, the way the report was printed could have
made a lot of difference to a lot of people as regards to myself
and my family, as it was a tragic accident and the verdict was
accidental death. Without the help and assistance of the Press
Complaints Commission we would never have had an apology from
the editor.
I would like to say thank you to the Press Complaints
Commission as without them no apology would have been received.
