Select Committee on Culture, Media and Sport Written Evidence

APPENDIX 92

Memorandum submitted by Sara Grinnell

My name is Sara Grinnell and I had reason to complain about the conduct of my local paper in January, 2001 to the Press Complaints Commission, they recently wrote to me with regard to your inquiry.

I feel compelled to write to you and explain my experience. I have nothing but praise for the Commission, they dealt with my complaint with efficiency and great compassion. Although the outcome of my complaint was satisfactory, I feel the Commission should be given greater power to bring to account Reporters and the papers they work for. I had hoped the paper in question would be more sensitive after my complaint, however they have gone on to report on other tragic deaths with inaccuracies and certainly no thought to grieving relatives. If anything comes of this inquiry, I would dearly hope that it provides the Commission with more power to prevent other families having their lives splashed all over the papers when they are trying desperately to learn to live with the tragedy that has befallen them.
