CINEMAGOING 11, DODONA RESEARCH 2003

The table below presents estimates of industry revenues and costs over the period from 1996 to 2002. It is worth commenting on the sources of some of the figures. Films rental is estimated on the basis of a government statistical enquiry which ran from 1950 to the end of 2001. As this enquiry did not cover all cinemas, the estimates below include an allowance to compensate for the absence of independent operators who often pay above average rentals. Concession, or refreshment, spend per head figures and margins are estimated, as is the other income category. This last item covers income like booking fees, which can be as much as £0.50 per ticket, films not tracked by box office monitoring organisations such as those shown to kids' clubs and managers' specials, and miscellaneous income.

Finally, it should be noted that the average ticket price below is the average paid by customers for each admission. It thus represents a mixture of full price and discounted tickets, for example those available to children, students, seniors and at specific times of day or week. It also includes higher priced seats, notably the superior seats sold by the Odeon circuit and tickets for VIP or luxury screens.
