SUBMISSION 2

Letter from Mo Heard to the Chairman

CLOSURE OF MoMI

Many people are dismayed at the news that the bfi will not develop another film museum despite their assertions in 1999 that there would be a "bigger, better" MoMI. I worked at the museum from l988, leaving in 1996 in frustration at the curator's dumbing-down policies. As you are a visitor to the NFT and love cinema, I am hoping that you might put your name to a letter which I'm sending to Tessa Jowell. (I'm not sure if protocol will allow you to do this).

Those of us who had worked at the museum since 1988 never believed the spin put on the temporary closure in 1999, and always suspected that the bfi had another agenda. We have no pleasure now in saying "we told you so".

Although I know that there's absolutely no-one left at the bfi with the enthusiasm, the will, the knowledge or the showmanship needed to build another film museum, at least the public must know why the bfi can't use the building for its original purpose. I attach a copy of the letter for your consideration.
