SUBMISSION 5
Memorandum submitted by the Children's
Film and Television Foundation
The Children's Film and Television Foundation
(CFTF) believes that it is very important to continue to make
British films in Britain, films which are culturally relevant
to this country but will also have international appeal. This
is particularly important in terms of films for children and young
people. Despite the success of blockbusters like Harry Potter
there are far too few films, particularly live action films, which
address the needs of this audience. British Television including
Children's TV should work closely with film makers. There is still
an artificial barrier between "pure" film and "made
for television" drama.
There is a need for better distribution and
exhibition systems for more specialised film and again, this is
particularly true for children's films. Such films also require
production support. In the past the Eady levy helped fund specialised
children's films. Once it disappeared British-made children's
films virtually disappeared as well.
The CFTF is working with the Film Council and
the BBC to support the development of more films for children
and the family but real commitment in terms of production, exhibition
and distribution will be required to make this initiative successful.
