Letter from Professor Sir Christopher
Frayling of the Royal College of Art
I write in support of the British Film Institute
within film education and British film culture. Through its library,
its archive, its film and DVD releases, and its film theatre,
the bfi is universally recognised as a key organisation
within film from its servicesmyself included. Its archive
has ensured that the film heritage is treated with the seriousness
it deserves. In a national culture which has never quite come
to terms with film as a serious contributor, the bfi has
carried the torch for the study and enjoyment of the medium "as
culture and as business". I do hope that it can continue
to thrive under the aegis of the Film Council. It is the envy
of the world, and has been hugely influential.
