SUBMISSION 29

Memorandum submitted by Mr Martin Scorsese

I have had the pleasure of a close association with the bfi for over 25 years, during which time I have participated in numerous interviews, events and screenings at their National Film Theatre. I have also been aware of, and in some instances involved with, the extraordinary preservation and restoration work accomplished by the bfi.

Furthermore, in 1996, I had the privilege of making A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese through American Movies as part of a series of documentaries produced by the bfi honouring world cinemas.

As a world-renowned institution celebrating the art of cinema, the bfi's collection of films, stills, posters, scripts, and related materials is unparalleled. It provides an irreplaceable source for film-makers, historians, scholars and students, as well as anyone interested in what has undoubtedly come to be recognised as the art form of the twentieth century.

The bfi is an integral part of the history, and future of British cinema and the British film industry. It is deeply important that it be supported and that its future be assured so that it may continue to serve generations to come.
