Memorandum submitted by Fylingdales Action
Network (6 January 2003)
I am writing on behalf of the Fylingdales Action
Network based in Whitby, North Yorkshire. We are a group of local
people who have been campaigning for some time against the upgrading
of Fylingdales for use as part of the US Star Wars system. We
have been very concerned about the lack of opportunity for public
discussion and debate of these crucial issues, and have organised
a number of public meetings and other events to raise awareness
locally.
Having now received the information that the
Defence Committee plan to visit Fylingdales as part of its enquiries,
we would like to request a meeting where local people are able
to express their concerns. We have been disappointed at the very
limited circulation of the discussion document and consider that
a well publicised local meeting would provide opportunity for
an informed public debate which is long overdue.
We would like to know when you plan to visit
Fylingdales, and would like to suggest that you arrange to hold
such a meeting in Whitby or Pickering and advertise it in the
relevant local papers.
