Select Committee on Education and Skills Written Evidence

32. Supplementary memorandum submitted by Ian Schagen (DP 50)

NOTES ON VALUE-ADDED FROM KS2 TO GCSE FOR SELECTIVE AND NON-SELECTIVE SCHOOLS—REQUESTED BY COMMITTEE ON 27 NOVEMBER 2002 (QUESTION 221)

Interest was expressed by the Select Committee on the underlying data behind the modelling of the impact of selective schools on value-added performance from KS2 1996 to GCSE 2001. The following table shows the raw results, in terms of GCSE total point score, for selective and non-selective schools, broken down by KS2 average level. It also indicates the numbers of pupils in the dataset at each level. The figure displays these results graphically.

Very similar results are found for average GCSE point score.

It should be noted that the above table and figure are based purely on raw data, and take no account of a range of background factors which are included in the sophisticated multilevel modelling which has been carried out and reported previously (see Schagen and Schagen, 2002). In particular, it takes no account of the percentage eligible for free school meals, which has a significant effect on value-added performance. In general, selective schools tend to have much lower levels of free school meal eligibility.
