Memorandum from the Institute of Environmental
Management and Assessment (IEMA)
The Institute of Environmental Management and
Assessment (IEMA) was formed in September 1999, with the Government's
blessing, following a merger between the Environmental Auditors
Registration Association (EARA), the Institute of Environmental
Assessment (IEA) and the Institute of Environmental Management
(IEM), thus creating the professional body for the environment.
It currently has over 7,000 individual and 300
corporate members worldwide. As well as being the custodian of
the EMAS and SiLC Registers*, it now oversees the next stages
of Project Acorn. It also has a wealth of experience in devising
and administering various professional standards for environmental
practitioners.
This Institute is also a founder member of Society
for the Environment (SocEnv). The aim of this Society is to bring
together professional bodies and learned societies who have environmental
disciplines at the core of their activities.
The Institute undertook a project in early 2001
to explore the desirability of establishing national Sustainable
Development Standards by holding a conference in London (120 delegates),
issuing a questionnaire to all its members asking specifically
about this subject and devising a set of sustainable development
standards. It also contacted a large number of post-graduates
(environmental science degrees) to obtain their opinion on job
opportunities in this field.
The Institute subsequently reported these findings
to the Department for Education and Skills on 4 February 2002.
