Supplementary letter and memorandum from
John Healey MP, Economic Secretary, HM Treasury
Following my appearance before the Committee
on 30 April, I attach the further information I agreed to provide.
Eric Lewis, the committee specialist, has also
advised that you are interested in how the considerations applying
to the taxation of aviation fuel differ from those applying to
the taxation of road transport fuels. I am happy to cover this
issue as well as those raised in the evidence session, and have
included material on it in the attached response.
In addition, I thought it might be helpful if
I set out a short note on the economic benefits of the aviation
industry to the UK, which I agreed to do at my appearance. As
I suggested to the Committee during the evidence session, this
was contained in the recent airport capacity consultation document,
so my note summarises the key information in The future development
of air transport in United Kingdom on the economic benefits of
aviation and the specific benefits from new airport capacity options.
It also draws upon earlier research on the wider economic benefits
of aviation.
I trust that this will be helpful.
