3. As you note in your letter, the department
is still finalising precisely how WSSD is to be followed up. The
Secretary of State will be able to say much more about this when
she appears before the Committee in January. And by then we should
also have available the annual UK report on sustainable development.
Nevertheless I would be happy to explain the outcome of the World
Summit on Sustainable Development and how we are approaching the
taking forward of commitments which the UK has signed up toand,
of course, any other issues which the Committee members would
like to pursue.

5. I enclose with this letter some background
material which may be useful: Mrs Beckett's written Parliamentary
answer on the outcome of WSSD[1];
a note on the principal WSSD outcomes[2];
a grid showing how WSSD commitments have been allocated within
government[3];
and a note on partnerships.[4]
We stand ready to provide further material to the Committee, if
that would be helpful.
