Select Committee on Environmental Audit Minutes of Evidence

Supplementary memorandum

Letter to the Clerk of the Committee from Mr Chris Murphy, Deputy Chief Executive, Chartered Institute of Wastes Management

During the evidence given by Dr Jane Beasley and myself to the Environment Audit Committee on 22 January 2003 we were asked to provide further written information on two matters.

The first was a comparison of the various national strategies in the UK and that work is almost complete and will be sent separately (see annex).

Mr Ainsworth asked for the source of the figures regarding my statement that SMEs produce more than 50% of the commercial and individual waste in the UK. Information from the Dti small business service shows that SMEs account for over 90% of the business in the UK (albeit this includes micro companies of 1-2 person operation).

The Environment Agency national waste production survey results show that SMEs (all companies employing over 250 persons) produce 61% of the commercial and industrial waste.

I trust that the above is of value.
