FCO announcement on the appointment of Sir Jeremy Greenstock as Special Representative on Iraq, 17 June 2003

APPOINTMENT OF J GREENSTOCK

  Announcement today that Sir Jeremy Greenstock is replacing John Sawers as Special Representative on Iraq.

  Sir Jeremy will take up his appointment in September following the completion of his diplomatic Service posting as Ambassador at the United Nations.

  The Prime Minister holds Jeremy in the highest regard and has been consistently impressed by his work in the UN, particularly during the recent negotiations on Iraq. His appointment shows the strength of our continuing commitment to Iraq and our determination to put Iraq in the hands of its people.

  David Richmond, currently the UK's Ambassador on the EU Political and Security Committee in Brussels has been appointed as Sir Jeremy's deputy. He will take up his post in July, to ensure continuity following John Sawer's departure. David is an Arabic speaker and his previous postings include Baghdad.

What will Sir Jeremy do?

  His main role will be to contribute to and support the political process leading to the establishment of a representative Iraqi government under the terms of SCR 1483.

  He will work closely with leading Iraqi representatives, US colleagues, the Coalition Provisional Authority, UN and other representatives of the international community.

Who does he report to?

  He will report to the Prime Minister as necessary and to the range of government ministers with an interest in Iraq.

Who pays him?

  The Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
