Select Committee on Foreign Affairs Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDICES TO THE MINUTES OF EVIDENCE

APPENDIX 1

Letter to the Chairman from Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt MP, Secretary of State for Trade and Industry: Postponement of Evidence Session

As you are aware, I am due to appear before the Quadripartite Committee on 27 January 2003 to give evidence to aid the Committee's consideration of draft secondary legislation to be made under the Export Control Act. Unfortunately, due to the highly complex nature of some of the controls we are proposing to introduce (which in some cases have proved even more complex than we originally anticipated) it has not been proved possible to publish the consultation document on the secondary legislation as early as we had originally planned. I would therefore suggest that we postpone the date for my appearance before the Committee until after publication. I hope the Committee will accept my sincerest apologies for this delay.

I am mindful that I have given my commitment to the Committee that the secondary legislation will not be finalised before the Committee has had an opportunity to examine the draft proposals and, if necessary, produce a report. I hope therefore to appear before the Committee at the earliest opportunity after the publication of the consultation document. My officials will liaise with the Clerk to the Committee to arrange a suitable date.

14 January 2003
