Select Committee on Home Affairs Written Evidence

Letter to the Chairman of the Committee from Mr John Gieve CB, Permanent Secretary, Home Office

ANNUAL REPORT: SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION

At the recent evidence session I offered to write with details of my pay. Martin Narey and Leigh Lewis are similarly content to share this information. My salary, and that of my colleagues, is set out below:
Pay Range
John Gieve£140-145k
Leigh Lewis£135-140k
Martin Narey£135-140k

This information, presented in the format used by the Department's Resource Accounts, is for current gross salary and does not include any performance pay or bonuses for this year as they have not yet been agreed.

Further senior management pay information is also contained within the Department's Resource Accounts and the Annual Report (Table 6(iii)).

Martin Narey has also asked me to take this opportunity to respond on a couple of detailed points raised in his evidence. He confirms (question 44) that in 2006 non-overcrowded capacity will at that point be 70,400. He also confirms (question 80) that no targets have been issued to Category C prisons in respect of prisoners who must be reclassified as Category D, other than the constant pressure on Governors to re-classify prisoners as and when necessary.
