Memorandum by Queen's Medical Centre Nottingham
University Hospital NHS Trust (MS 66)
The Hospital is one of two in the city. At the
QMC we have 3,780 births per year our colleagues at the City hospital
deliver approximately 5,320 births per year.
We are a tertiary referral centre for Fetomaternal
medicine and RCOG approved trainers for advance ultrasound and
feto maternal medicine sub specialty training.
To balance the high intensive obstetric care
and the potential medicalisation of childbirth we have in the
last two years introduced Midwife Led Care. Since the introduction
of this type of care we have not had problems with recruitment
and retention of midwives. It has offered women more choice and
the development of alternatives therapies such as aromatherapy
within the unit is raising staff morale and receiving excellent
evaluation from our mothers.
The Community Midwifery Service in Nottingham
is one of only two services that are not integrated to the acute
maternity services. The City PCT currently manages the Community
Midwifery Service. The PCT with the responsibility for the Community
Midwifery Service are also charged with the re establishment of
the Maternity Services Liaison Committee (MSLC) which has been
disbanded now for over a year.
Over the years there has been many trials of
integration this was particularly evident around the time of the
Changing Childbirth Report (DOH, 1993).
We have now established a Midwifery Network
Board within Nottingham, which aims to ensure that there is equity
of service for mothers and their families across Nottingham. In
doing so it plans to offer a coordinated approach to the management
of midwives and the midwifery services, including service development
and change regardless of organisational boundaries.
Staff Numbers: we currently have an establishment
of 139.54 for the maternity service.
91.88 WTE are midwives, this number includes
the, midwife specialist posts, and the operational manager but
excludes the Head of Midwifery, which is part of a Divisional
Post.
