Select Committee on Health Minutes of Evidence

Memorandum by The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Trust (MS 69)

The Bournemouth Maternity Unit is a 17 bedded low risk Unit, established 11 years ago, when Boscombe Hospital was closed and The Royal Bournemouth Hospital opened.

    —  Deliveries are approximately 700 per annum.

    —  Annual budget is £1.458 million with a staffing complement of 45.29 WTE.

    —  We were the first NHS Maternity Unit to achieve "Baby Friendly" status which is supported by WHO and UNISEF promoting breast feeding.

    —  Our breast feeding rates have consistently met national targets.

    —  We do not offer epidurals and only perform emergency caesarian sections.

    —  Consultant antenatal clinics are held at Bournemouth for high risk women although they deliver at Poole Hospital.

    —  Maternity care on the Unit is predominantly midwife led although medical staff are available if required.

    —  Group practice care has been implemented.

    —  Discussions have commenced to develop the Unit into a Birthing Centre.
