APPENDIX 3

Memorandum by The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (PS4)

ABPI RESPONSE TO OFT REPORT ON THE CONTROL OF ENTRY REGULATIONS AND RETAIL PHARMACY SERVICES IN THE UK

MEMORANDUM TO HEALTH COMMITTEE

The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) brings together companies in Britain producing prescription medicines, whether branded or generic, and other organisations involved in research and development and/or with an interest in the pharmaceutical industry operating in the UK. ABPI member companies manufacturer and supply more than 90% of the medicines suppliers to the National Health Service. The ABPI is pleased to be invited to comment on the above.

The ABPI is pleased to welcome any proposals which widen access to modern and effective medicines in accordance with good clinical care to the benefit of patients and the NHS. The ABPI, therefore, is in principle supportive of any moves which ensure access to modern and effective pharmacy services. However, any proposals must enhance and not undermine in any way the current level of service provision.

The ABPI also supports enhancing patient care by providing quicker and more efficient access to health care through effective access to nurses and pharmacists skills.

The ABPI would welcome proposals which ensure a consistent approach across the whole of the UK.
