MIDWIVES' INTENTION TO PRACTISE STATISTICS

The statistics on practising midwives reflect the total number of registered midwives who are eligible to practise and their specific areas of practice. The information is derived from the Notification of Intention to Practise forms, which are unique to midwifery. The following figures relate to the year ending 31 March 2002.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN REGISTERED AND PRACTISING MIDWIVES

A comparison is given between the numbers holding effective registration as a midwife and those actually practising in the year ending 31 March 2002. The longer term trend of practising midwives versus those on the effective register is shown below. While absolute numbers of both are in decline, the proportion of midwives in practice is rising over time.
