APPENDICES TO THE MINUTES OF EVIDENCE
APPENDIX I
Letter to the Chairman from the Secretary
of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs: Indonesia
I am writing to inform your Committee that we
have received notification from the Indonesian Government of their
intention to use British-built armoured personnel carriers in
Aceh for casualty evacuation and logistical support. However,
the Indonesian Government has provided assurances that this equipment
will not be used to infringe human rights in Aceh or elsewhere.
All export licence applications for Indonesia
will, of course, continue to be rigorously assessed on a case-by-case
basis against the consolidated EU and national arms export licensing
criteria, taking account of the circumstances prevailing at the
time and other relevant announced Government policies. Our position
on human rights is clear and unequivocal.
I am placing a copy of this letter in the Libraries
of both Houses. I am also copying this letter to Michael Ancram
and Menzies Campbell.
