Select Committee on International Development Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX II

Memorandum from the Defence Manufacturers Association

We noted an action on us from the latest report from the Committee, covering the FCO Annual Report for 2000 (at paragraph 79) in which we are invited to submit annual memorandum to the Committee on the numbers and reasons for withdrawal of Export Licence applications by British companies.

Whilst we are not, unlike the DTI, in a position to have full sight of all instances in which companies do withdraw licence applications and, therefore, it will be somewhat "hit and miss", with us having to rely on companies telling when this has happened. I can confirm that we will do our best to rise to this challenge and see what input we may be able to provide to the Committee.

On another matter, during Jack Straw's evidence session on 21 March, we noted (at question 20—Andrew Lansley) comment that more should be done to raise awareness within Industry of what the criteria are and how they are applied. The DMA has worked with the FCO in this regard since July 1997, and following these comments, is now actively seeking to step up these efforts. We are also working with the DTI on a series of regional briefings on the new Export Controls.
