Memorandum by South East Lincolnshire Travellers' Association (OPT 08)

OVERCROWDING ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT

It was suggested to me by the Head of Transport Services, Lincolnshire County Council, that I as secretary of the South East Lincolnshire Travellers' Association (SELTA) should pass on to you information that SELTA has gathered about summer overcrowding on the Skegness-Nottingham railway line. As part of our campaign to improve the quality of the rail service to Skegness, SELTA makes counts of the number of passengers alighting from and boarding trains at Skegness station. Counts have been made every Saturday thoughout the duration of the summer timetable. This year all trains except the first have been monitored on Saturdays. We have also managed to do passenger counts on some Monday-Friday trains on a more random basis.

Enclosed are two sheets (arrivals and departures) showing numbers of passengers on Saturday trains with the overcrowded trains marked *. Also a separate sheet gives a list of observed overcrowded trains on Mondays-Fridays during the school holiday (summer) period.

Overcrowding on the railway to Skegness has been occuring for many years and last season was typical. We do have figures for a number of years past. The problem occurs to a lesser extent in the shoulder season too, especially on Butlins "change-over" days.

Central Trains has tried to address the problem but has not yet succeeded. However there is hope that next year funding will be found for Central Trains to hire extra stock to relieve the situation.

Michael R Berry

Hon Secretary SELTA
