Advance
time by one hour in England and Wales throughout the year; to

provide that the power to
make decisions in relation to time zones in Northern |

|
Ireland and Scotland be devolved
to the Northern Ireland Asembly and the |

Scottish Parliament; and for
connected purposes. |

Be
it enacted by the Queen’s most Excellent Majesty,
by and with the advice and |
|
|
consent of the Lords Spiritual
and Temporal, and Commons, in this present |
|
|
Parliament assembled, and
by the authority of the same, as follows:— |

Time
for general purposes |
|
|
Subject to section 3 of the Summer
Time Act 1972 (c. 6) (interpretation of |
|
|
references) the time for general
purposes shall be one hour in advance of |
|
|
|
|

Amendment
of the Summer Time Act 1972 |
|

(1) |
The Summer Time Act 1972
is amended as follows. |
|
|
(2) |
In section 1(1) (advance
of time during period of summer time)— |
|
|
(a) |
for “Great Britain”
substitute “England and Wales”, and |
|
|
(b) |
for “one hour”
substitute “two hours”. |
|
|
(3) |
Section 4 (Northern Ireland)
shall cease to have effect. |
|

In section 5 (Channel Islands
and Isle of Man) for “Great Britain” substitute |
|
|
|
|

Amendment
of the Interpretation Act 1978 |
|
|
For section 9 of the Interpretation
Act 1978 (c. 30) (references to time of day) |

Whenever an expression of
time occurs in an Act, the time referred to |

shall,
unless it is otherwise specifically stated, be held to be the
time |
|
|
established
by the Lighter Evenings Act 2004.” |

of the Scotland Act 1998 |

(1) |
The Scotland Act 1998 (c. 46)
is amended as follows. |

(2) |
In section L5 (time) of Schedule
5 (reserved matters)— |

(a) |
omit “, time zones
and the subject-matter of the Summer Time Act |
|
|
|
5 |
(b) |
insert as the first entry
under the cross-heading Exceptions— |
|
|
|
“Time zones and
the subject-matter of the Summer Time Act 1972”. |

Short
title, commencement and extent |
|
|
(1) |
This Act may be cited as
the Lighter Evenings Act 2004. |
|
|
(2) |
This Act shall come into
force on such day as the Secretary of State may by |
|

order appoint but not later
than two o’clock in the morning on 29th October |
|
|
|
|
(3) |
This Act extends to the whole
of the United Kingdom. |
