MORRIS DANCING IN THE NORTH WEST OF ENGLAND:

The traditional dance forms associated with the North west of England include Clog, Morris and Step Dancing. These continue in a healthy way.

However institutions such as Local Arts Councils and Local Authorities do not appear to acknowledge these indigenous traditions. In order to reinstate the profile of this valuable form of identity a small group has recently been formed to promote the North West Dance tradition.

All current dance groups are amateurs who dedicate large amounts of time and energy to the dance. There is a real risk of imposing bureaucratic standards on traditions that thrive in an informal environment. Any development of this dance should recognise this culture which at best encourages diversity, innovation and commitment.

There needs to be recognition at all levels of society and government that the traditions need acknowledgement and where necessary, protection, a good example is the recent licensing bill, which recognised the unique needs and position of Morris Dancing.
