Select Committee on Defence, Foreign Affairs, International Development and Trade and Industry Written Evidence

Annex A

Letter from the Deputy Director General of the Spanish Ministry of the Economy to the Clerk of the Committees

I have the pleasure to answer your letter of 6 January 2004 related to the Committee on Strategic Exports Controls (the Quadripartite Committee) of the British House of Commons.

The UK delegation in the European Union COARM Group has detailed data about the Spanish legislation and practices with regard to the foreign trade of defence materials. It is our main goal to reach a better understanding on how we can identify and close the existing gaps among all EU Partners in this trade.

I apologise for not answering the questions mentioned in your request, since different Ministries are involved in the Spanish decision-making process and it will take us a long period to compile all the information.

Do not hesitate, please, if you have any additional question or comments on this subject, to contact us again.
