Primary Policy
The LEA offers free transport if the school is the nearest designated one, measured by the shortest, safest walking route and the statutory walking distance (2 miles) is applied.

Denominational Policy
The LEA will provide free transport if the pupil is attending the nearest school of the denomination desired by the parents and the statutory or specified walking distances are met.

Special Needs Policy

Each case is considered individually and a decision is taken as to whether there is a need for transport or if there are exceptional circumstances that would prevent them from attending school, for both Statemented and non-Statemented pupils. Statutory walking distances may apply.

If the pupil has a Statement of SEN the distance limits do not apply and transport will be provided if it is deemed necessary. For non-Statemented pupils mainstream policies are applied.

Post 16
Students are eligible for assistance transport if they are studying full-time, attending the nearest appropriate school/college, further than a specified distance and are aged between 16-19 years.

Students or their families must be in receipt of certain benefits, be studying full-time, attend the nearest appropriate school/college, live further than the specified distance and be aged between 16-19 to receive free transport, otherwise no provision is made.

A parental/student contribution is required for assistance for mainstream students if they are, studying full-time, attending the nearest appropriate school/college further than the specified distance. The contribution may be lowered or waived if the student or their family is in receipt of certain benefits.

Students can apply for an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), Access Fund or the Learners Support Fund, to help towards the cost of travel.

The LEA offers a concessionary fare/travel scheme to post 16 students studying full-time.
