Select Committee on Education and Skills Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence

APPENDIX B

REASONS FOR DRIVING CHILDREN TO SCHOOL

The data in this Appendix are taken from recent research by TfL with parents in London households where at least one child is regularly taken to school by car.

The chart below shows how parents described their main reason for driving a child to school. The majority view convenience or speed as the main reason for using the car.

The parents were also asked why alternatives were not favoured. Around 60% cited distance as a reason for not walking, with 15%-25% citing reasons of safety, security, time or the pupil's age. The main reasons cited for not using local buses were age (for example, only 5% of families would consider unaccompanied bus travel for 10-year olds), lack of a suitable route or bus journey times. Around 90% would be likely to use a dedicated bus if it were provided free of charge but this fell to around 40% at a daily fare of £2.
