Select Committee on Foreign Affairs Written Evidence

Transcript of BBC World Service Phone-in

Peter Howarth Lees:  An American was killed in Khobar two years ago. An American couple were attacked—a bomb was placed on their vehicle one week after Simon was killed in June. A German national was killed in September. So this is simply not true that it's just against British, it's against western nationals. There are terrorists operating in.. (cut off)

Interviewer:  Let the Ambassador get a word in.

HRH Prince Turki Al Faisal Al Saud:  What I'm saying to you is that the people who were held for these cases have confessed to their crimes, Now may have an issue with that..

Peter Howarth Lees:  They were tortured into.. (cut off)

Interviewer:  They were tortured, Peter says

HRH Prince Turki Al Faisal Al Saud:  They were tortured and there was a complaint about it and that complaint would have been investigated and the torturer would have been punished because it is against the law to torture people there. So, it is not just an issue of or a matter of you telling me that it is against all of the westerners. It is not. But I will agree with you on one thing We are as much concerned about the issue of the security and of the safety of residents of the Kingdom as you are and we would go out of our way to try to find the root cause of this problem without any smokescreen putting on our eyes. And the fact that we are doing all our best and cooperating with your government as you know we've had visitors from your security forces to the Kingdom to help us in trying to reach a conclusive termination of this issue.

Interviewer:  We're going to have to leave it there I'm afraid Ambassador Because we are out of time. That is all we have time for Today so my thanks to my guest the Saudi Ambassador here in London, Prince Turki Al Faisal and to everyone who has taken part in this programme.

This is the full copy of the defence papers the Saudi lawyers put together in July 2002 and handed it in, it was translated from Arabic. . . I obtained this from Canada and the FCO were furious they said I was not to see it, I then shared it with the other families, the FCO had it already but had no intention of telling anyone.
