Select Committee on Foreign Affairs Written Evidence

Letter to the Parliamentary and Devolution Department, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, from the Second Clerk of the Committee, 22 April 2004

At its meeting on Tuesday, the Committee noted the recent press article in The Times newspaper concerning Mr Craig Murray, the UK Ambassador to Uzbekistan ("Our Man in Uzbekistan defies Whitehall to attack rights record", The Times, 1 April 2004—attached).[2] As you are no doubt aware, this is not the first report to appear in the media about Mr Murray and the human rights situation in Uzbekistan.

The Committee has instructed me to write and request the Foreign Office's comments on this article, as part of its ongoing scrutiny of the Office's activities. I would be grateful if I could receive a response to this request no later than Monday 17 May.

Geoffrey Farrar

Second Clerk of the Committee

22 April 2004
