PALLIATIVE CARE SERVICES IN THE NORTH WEST

GREATER MANCHESTER
Hospice Provision

Community Services

  There is a Diana Nursing team in Salford. Specialist services include diabetes, asthma, cystic fibrosis, haematology/haemophilia, and children who require ventilatory support.

  Sargent Cancer provides social work services for children with cancer in Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh.

  CLIC (Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood) nurses provide a service to children and young people with cancer and leukaemia from Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. Psychology services from the Children's Hospital also provide bereavement care and there is a cross-Manchester bereavement service.

  There is a Young Oncology Unit based at the Christie Hospital which provides acute treatment, palliative/maintenance treatment, terminal care and support for parents and families of children and young people up to 21.

  The Gaddum Centre is a Registered Charity which provides counselling to families of children with life-limiting conditions. This service is restricted to residents of Manchester, Salford, Stockport or Trafford.

CHESHIRE AND MERSEYSIDE

Community Services

  Children's community nursing services. Outreach services from Alder Hey, which has two consultants (one medical, one nurse) in palliative care, provide care to children in the Wirral and more widely across the area. Children's Macmillan services are also available in Liverpool. CLIC nurses provide a service to children and young people with cancer and leukaemia and Sargent Cancer care provide social work support from Alder Hey Hospital.

  There is a range of voluntary agencies involved with bereavement e.g. Befriending and Sargent scheme, Butterfly project and Keystones Counselling. There is also the Child Death Helpline which is a listening service that offers emotional support to all those affected by the death of a child, although this service is offered across the country it is based in Liverpool and London.

Community Services

  Both childrens' hospices link regularly to community paediatric staff working in local teams. Children's community nursing services and adult Macmillan nurses in Morecambe Bay with scope for children. Morecambe Bay has psychology services that provide bereavement support. Specialist services for cystic fibrosis and enteral feeding.
