Select Committee on Office of the Deputy Prime Minister: Housing, Planning, Local Government and the Regions Written Evidence

Memorandum by Sheringham Town Council (HOM 06)

Sheringham Town Council is fully supportive of this Inquiry and all initiatives towards supporting homeless people. We have no statutory housing remit, no housing stock, and no direct contact with any homeless people, but our Local Authority—North Norfolk District Council, does.

Our opinion is that North Norfolk District Council is fully committed to working on all aspects of homelessness. They have a forum, which meets regularly to discuss ideas, information and gain inter-agency co-operation.

They are working hard to be proactive—sending in support/outreach workers to try and prevent homelessness due to tenancy or family breakdown. There are also linked support "packages" from local homeless agencies/charities, to give expert help when needed.

There has been a definite move away from B+B use—as recommended in the legislation. Homeless people also certainly appear to be given immediate and concerted assistance to gain suitable accommodation.

Cherry Ashton

Sheringham Town Council Clerk
