Select Committee on Office of the Deputy Prime Minister: Housing, Planning, Local Government and the Regions Written Evidence

Memorandum by Cindy Harris (CAB 20)

Some comments in favour of the vital role played by CABE and its Design Review panel in raising the standards of public buildings and public open space. It has opened up a whole new area of debate concerning the built environment and promoted higher expectations from the public as a whole and clients and users in particular. The actual schemes it reviews seem entirely appropriate although limited time and resources may mean that it does not see all the schemes it would ideally wish to comment on.

The future of CABE should be safeguarded, as an independent watchdog, and in particular as a provocative and authoritative voice in the national debate on the future of architecture and urban design. Its publications are well researched and targeted and provide a valuable resource.
