Select Committee on Public Administration Written Evidence

Memorandum by Stewart Luck (HON 4)

I support the idea of an honours system, but to be of value the system must have integrity and be respected by everyone.

Today it is embarrassing to be referred to as a Member of the British Empire, it doesn't sound right and is offensive to many.

Also, honours should not be the gift of politicians. They should be awarded by society to members from all areas of that society. An independent body should be established that represents all of Britain, all backgrounds, professions, etc and they should decide who is to be offered an honour.
