Select Committee on Public Administration Written Evidence

Memorandum by Mrs Diane M Lennon (HON 8)

I support the idea of having an Honours system. It is a tradition that brings people a lot of pride and pleasure and it acknowledges their contribution to the success of Britain. I am sure, however, that it could be streamlined, rationalised and more fairly applied. The cost of administration should also be reviewed regularly.

I like the name of the "knighthood" but sympathise with ladies who would prefer not to be called a "dame", although I personally don't think it sounds too absurd.

I object to people being given an award simply by holding a post for a number of years. It should not be seen as being "automatic". I also object to Civil Servants and others being given an Honour for simply doing their job for which they are well paid. I really think we should look at the "extra" things that people have achieved, over and above their normal work commitment.

How do people get nominated? How could I nominate someone? Can it be done by the internet? Could local nominations go before a regional committee before being passed on to a central panel?
