Select Committee on Public Administration Written Evidence

Memorandum by Alan Mattingly (HON 14)

The Independent (22 December) has published my name as being among those who have declined to accept an honour in recent years. It is true that, in 1998, I said "thanks, but no thanks" to an offer of an OBE from 10 Downing Street.

I didn't seek publicity for that decision at the time, and I don't do so now. However, since the matter has now reached the public arena, and since you are to chair an investigation into the system, I am taking the liberty of sending to you, with this letter, a copy of the letter which I sent to 10 Downing Street in 1998 explaining my reason for turning down an OBE. I hope that it might be of some small interest to you.
