Select Committee on Public Administration Written Evidence

Memorandum by Mr R Neil Marshman (HON 21)

As an ordinary "pleb" in the street, I think that we should keep the honours system and the suggestion that knighthoods should be scrapped, should itself be scrapped. Such honours are an important feature of life in this country, which we should maintain—I would hate to see the government remove another historic part of our way of life. I think fewer gongs for politicians though would be a good idea—with more importance being played to other members of society.

If hereditary peers have now been removed from the House of Lords (another bad idea in my book) then the government should start allowing new such titles to be created—as clearly they can no longer influence government.
