Select Committee on Public Administration Written Evidence

Memorandum by Richard A McLellan (HON 25)

My concern is with the rather devalued "honorary" knighthoods bestowed on foreigners who have given good service to this country. Using the term `honorary' means that it is not quite a real knighthood. It is neither one thing nor the other.

I would suggest that consideration be given to the replacement of honorary knighthoods with membership of, say, The Order of the Friends of Britain. Many other nations confer such a singular honour on foreigners.
