Select Committee on Public Administration Written Evidence

Memorandum submitted by the Suffolk Fabian Society (HON 34)

We understand from The Guardian of 4 February that your Committee will be consulting the public about the future of the honours system.

The subject was in fact considered at our Society's last Annual General Meeting. There was an exact division of opinion. Half wished the honours system to be abolished in toto. Half wished drastic change, removing any Royal role, and only rewarding—with a common award—those who had done useful voluntary service to the community. This award would not refer to the Empire.
