Select Committee on Public Administration Written Evidence

Memorandum by Mrs J M Riley (HON 77)

Following an article in the Sunday Telegraph that you are asking for views on the above system. I think the whole system should be done away with, after all, it has become a farce.

As the "captains" of the industry, show business entertainers, sportsmen etc, earn very good money for what they do. I realise that some of them do help various charities, but very often it is for their own ends—publicity, tax avoidance etc.

As the military, police, lifeboat and others have their own awards, unless people help voluntarily with charities and local environment etc., they should not be included in the list.

It should be done away with altogether—after all those of us without awards will soon be the exclusive club, not the ones with awards.
